Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge specific decisions from the official, mirroring the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
