Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
