Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
